Exploring the concept.

Do you remember the words we learnt at the previous lesson? Pupil X will write and pupil Y will correct

Reading

Now open your books on page 38. What do you see in each of the 4 pictures? (a girl reading a book, a boy doing diving, a man surfing the Net, a girl dancing)

Read the texts A-D quickly. What topic do they have in common? Don’t pay attention to any unknown words yet. (all four passages have as a common theme the life of a teenager and their favoutite pastime)

A.

Elizabeth (18 years old)

I’m what you call a bookworm. I find nothing more entertaining that staying at home and reading a good book. I read anything from adventure to science fiction. If I start reading a book I don’t put it down until I finish it. My parents are constantly complaining that I don’t get out much, but I’ve no intention of changing. I’ve recently started writing and I hope to write a best seller in the future. I also spend a lot of time surfing the Net. Last week I came across a site for people interested in writing and I became a member. Since then I’ve had the opportunity to talk to people with similar interests, and it’s nice to know that I’m not so out of the ordinary.

B.

James (17 years old)

My idea of fun is anything related to sports. I’ve always been sporty and athletic and I’m willing to try whatever will get my adrenaline going. Unlike many people my age, I don’t enjoy going out to cafes. I love doing things that keep me outdoors in the natural environment. I became a member of a rock climbing club about three years ago, and I must admit that I’ve had a lot of fun. I’ve met lots of interesting people and I’ve also been to lots of interesting places. Besides this, I also find water sports great. I’ve been windsurfing for ages and I’ve also recently started taking scuba-diving lessons.

C.

Bruce (16 years old)

I’m really into surfing and playing strategy games ever since my father got me my first computer when I was six. When I’m not playing computer games, I tend to be out and about. My friends and I spend a lot of timeat our local football pitch so, although I’m not so athletic, I do get some exercise. I’m also into hanging out at the local mall where my friends and I either go to the cinema or to a café.

D.

Jenny (19 years old)

I’m very sociable and hang out at all the ‘in’ places. I have lots of friends and love meeting people. At the weekends, I usually go somewhere to dance. When I was five, my mother took me to the Contemporary School of Dance and, since then, I have never stopped dancing. I also love music and go to concerts very often. On top of that, I’m a member of local theatre group, and we put on performances every once in a while. We have a lot of fun choosing the plays and rehearsing. Since I joined the group, I’ve taken part in three different plays. It’s not only fun but also very rewarding.

Now read the texts again and answer the questions 1-9 below. Write A,B,C,D in the boxes

Which teenager/s mention/s

Not being interested in activities done by people their age? 1 -

Being interested in outdoor activities only 2 -

Doing only activities that keep them indoor 3 -

Doing an activity their parents helped them begin? 4 - , 5 -

Doing an activity their parents are not happy about? 6 -

Doing an activity that made it possible for them to go to different places? 7 -

(1 – b, 2 – b, 3 – a, 4 – c, 5 – d, 6 – a, 7 – b, 8 – c, 9 – d)

Now look at the texts once again, close your books and answer my questions.

  • What type of books does Elizabeth like reading?I read anything from adventure to science fiction.

  • What does she like about the new site she found on the net?I’ve had the opportunity to talk to people with similar interests, and it’s nice to know that I’m not so out of the ordinary.

  • How did being a member of a rock climbing club influence James?I’ve met lots of interesting people and I’ve also been to lots of interesting places.

  • Apart from rock climbing does James do other sports as well?I’ve been windsurfing for ages and I’ve also recently started taking scuba-diving lessons.

  • What does Bruce do apart from playing computer games? I’m also into hanging out at the local mall where my friends and I either go to the cinema or to a café.

  • Does she have any other hobbies apart from dancing?I also love music and go to concerts very often. On top of that, I’m a member of local theatre group

Writing

And now form the groups of 3 and each group should make a short story using all these new words and expressions (students make their own stories, the best group gets excellent results)

Discussion

Look at all the 4 texts again and tell me: If you could get to know one of these teenagers, who would it be and why? (students’answers)

Work with grammar

I see you are pretty tired now, so let’s relax a little bit. We’ll play “Let’s dream together” (I switch on a CD with relaxing music). Close your eyes and so I begin “you are at home, it’s a weekend and you have the whole day just for your hobby…” (students continue the story by adding one sentence each)

In the text A we had following phrases:

Since I joined the group, I’ve taken part in three different plays. Is Jenny still taking part in plays? (Yes) What grammar tense is it? (Present Perfect Simple)

I’ve been windsurfing for ages Has James stopped windsurfing? (No) which tense is that? (Present perfect Continuous)

So, Complete the rule about the uses of Present Perfect Simple and Present Perfect Continuous by underlining the correct words.

Use Present Perfect Simple / Present Perfect Continuous for an action or state which started in the past and continues up to present (emphasis on the action)

Use Present Perfect Simple / Present Perfect Continuous for an action or state which started in the past and continues up to present (emphasis on the duration)

Now read the text on page 39 and complete the blanks with Present Perfect Simple or Present Perfect Continuous of the verbs in brackets.

The Thespains

I (1)__________(always/want) to do something interesting in my free time, but I work quite long hours and I’m often very tired when I get home from work. Some time ago, afriend of mine gave the idea of joining the Thespains, a drama club which meets once a week. I (2)__________(be) a member for the last six months and I (3)___________(enjoy) every moment of it. The people in the club are very friendly, and the atmosphere is fun and relaxed. For the past few weeks, we (4)_________( rehearse) for a play that we’re going to put on the local community centre. I’m really looking forward to it. The daughter of one of the members(5)_________(study) fashion design for the last two years and (6)___________(design) our costumes. The first performance will be on Friday night and I hope everything will go well.

  1. Have always wanted

  2. Have been

  3. Have enjoyed/have been enjoying

  4. Have been rehearsing

  5. Has been studying

  6. Has designed

And now I want you to make your own sentences about your hobby. In your sentences you have to say how long you have been doing it and how much you have succeeded so far.

For example: I’ve been embroidering for 3 years now. I have embroidered 3 pictures so far.

(students make their own sentences and in such a way we create a story about their leisure time)

Conclusion (students say what new they have learnt at the lesson)
