This is the script of a play Christmas Carol that my students and me peformed last year. will be happy if you can use it.

Christmas carol (script)

Ведучий 1-Christmas is coming

Christmas is coming.

Christmas is coming,

The geese are getting fat,

Please put a penny

Into the old man's hat.

Ведучий 2 -If you haven't got a penny,

A ha'penny will do.

If you haven't got a ha'penny,

Then God bless you.

Christmas is coming.

Christmas is coming.

Ведучий 1-Tomorrow a big part of the world is going to celebrate catholic Christmas, Birth of Jesus Christ. So today we’d like to present a project “Christmas Carols”. Our project is about Christmas and New Year celebrations in Britain.

Ведучий 2 -And first of all we’d like to remind you some basic symbols associated with British Christmas. We’ll begin with a green forest guest Christmas Tree. The Christmas tree is often explained as a Christianization of pagan tradition and ritual surrounding the Winter Solstice, which included the use of evergreen trees, and an adaptation of pagan tree worship. The English language phrase «Christmas Tree» is first recorded in 1835 and represents an importation from the German language.

Ведучий 1-Christmas cards Christmas cards are usually given during the weeks preceding Christmas Day on December 25.The traditional greeting reads «Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year» much like the first commercial Christmas card, produced by Sir Henry Cole in 1843 in London.

Ведучий 2 -Boxing Day The first weekday after Christmas is a public holiday. In England it is called Boxing Day. In past times it was the traditional day to give presents to servants. This day is called Boxing Day because at one time the presents were put in boxes (Christmas boxes). Usually Boxing Day is December 26, but if Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, Boxing Day is on December 27.

Ведучий 1-Christmas dinner A traditional Christmas dinner consists of stuffed turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and a variety of other dishes. Some families have ham or roast goose instead of turkey. Pumpkin pie, plum pudding, and fruitcake are favorite desserts.

Ведучий 2 -The First Foot There is a funny tradition, connected with the New Year: the First Foot. This is the first visitor to enter a house on New Year’s morning. Traditionally, The First Foot’ should cross the threshold with a lump of coal and silver coin in his hands (or in some places with a glass of wine in one hand and a lump of coal in the other) to ensure the well- being of the family for the coming year. Coal helps to make fire in midwinter and there shall never be lack of food and drink during the coming year. The First Food must be a man because it is believed that if a woman first sets foot in the house, bad luck will follow the family throughout the year. It is a good thing everywhere if he is a tall, dark-haired, and handsome man.

Ведучий 1-And of course Christmas Carols. On the Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a carol service where special hymns are sung. People listen to readings from the Bible too. Sometimes carol-singers, especially children, go along the streets from house to house, singing citing poems in front of each house and asking for money.

Ведучий 2 -But there is a Christmas Carol which is not a song or a hymn. It is a story told more than a century and a half ago by one of the most wonderful story-tellers of the world – Charles Dickens, the famous English writer.

Scene 1

(Scrooge and his nephew).

N-Merry Christmas, Uncle! God save you.

S- Bah! Humbug!

N-Christmas a humbug? Uncle! You don't mean that.

S-What reason have you to be merry? You're poor enough.

N- Don't be cross, Uncle.

S-What else can I be when I live in such a world of fools as this? What's Christmas time to you but a time for finding yourself a year older and not a penny richer.

N-Uncle!

S- Nephew! Keep Christmas in your own way and let me keep it in mine.

N-Keep it? But you don't keep it!

S-Let me leave it alone then.

N- Christmas is the only time when men open their shut-up hearts and think of other people. And therefore, Uncle...although it has never put gold or silver in my pocket...I believe it has done me good, and I say, God bless it! Don't be cross, Uncle. Come, dine with us tomorrow.

S-I'll see you in hell first.

Scene 2

Племянник выходит, Скрудж подходит к окну, стоит, думая о делах… Стучатся двое просящих. Скрудж оборачивается, смотрит на них.

Просящий 1: Merry Christmas sir! We are collecting money for poor people.

Скрудж: Oh, money-money… What money?! Get away!

Просящий2: But thousands of people are in need, even foods and money…

Скрудж: Poor people’s place is in prison and work houses.

Просящие поют вместе

We wish you a Merry Christmas,

We wish you a Merry Christmas,

We wish you a Merry Christmas,

And a happy New Year!

Скрудж -I said to you get away immediately!

Просящий 1: It’s useless, let’s go (опустив головы, просящие уходят).

Scene 3

(Scrooge and the first ghost)

Скрудж -It's all still a hum...

….

Скрудж -How now! What do you want with me?

first ghost -Oh, much.

Скрудж - Who are you?

first ghost - Ask me who I was.

Скрудж -Who were you then?

first ghost -In life, I was your partner...Jacob Marley.

Скрудж -Mercy! Dreadful apparition, why do you trouble me? You are fettered in chains. Why?

first ghost -I wear the chain I forged in life. I made it link by link and yard by yard. Do you recognize its pattern?

Can you imagine the weight and length of the chain you bear? It was as heavy and long as this seven Christmas Eves ago.

Скрудж -Seven years dead and traveling all the time?

first ghost -The whole time. No rest, no peace.

Скрудж -You must've covered a lot of ground in seven years.

first ghost -I was blind! Blind! I could not see my own life! Hear me! My time is nearly gone. I am here to warn you...that you have yet a chance and a hope of escaping my fate. You will be haunted by three spirits.

Скрудж -That's the chance and hope?

first ghost – Expect the first. ..tomorrow when the bell tolls one. Expect the second the next night at the same hour. And the third upon the next night…at the last stroke of 12. Look to see me no more.

Scene 4

(The Ghost of the Past)

Скрудж -Are you the spirit whose coming was foretold to me?

Past -I am.

Скрудж -Who and what are you?

Past -I am the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Скрудж -Long past?

Past -Your past. Rise. And walk with me.

Скрудж -But I am mortal and liable to fall.

Past -Bear but a touch of my hand there...and you shall be up held in more than this.

Video flying over the city

Скрудж -Good heavens. I was bred in this place. I was a boy here.

Past - Your lip... is trembling. And what's that? On your cheek?

Скрудж - Nothing. Something in my eye.

Past -Do you remember the way?

Скрудж -Remember it? I could walk it blindfolded.

Video flying into the school

Скрудж -This...This was my school. This school is not quite deserted. A solitary child...neglected by his friends......is left here still.

Past -I know.

Скрудж Poor boy. Poor, poor boy.

Video boy singing a carol

Скрудж -Spirit, remove me from this place.

Past -I told you, these were shadows of things that have been. They are what they are. Do not blame me.

Скрудж -Remove me. I cannot bear it. Leave me! Take me back! Haunt me no longer!

Video putting the fire out.

Scene 5

(Scrooge and the second ghost)

Video appearance of the ghost of the present

Скрудж -Oh, blast!

second ghost -Enter, Scrooge!

-Come in! Come in and know me better, man! I am the Ghost of Christmas Present. Look upon me! You have never seen the likes of me before?

Скрудж -Never.

second ghost -Have never walked forth with my elder brothers?

Скрудж -I don't think that I have. You have many brothers?

second ghost -More than 1,800. 1,842, to be exact.

Скрудж -I see you wear a scabbard, but no sword.

second ghost -Indeed. Peace on Earth. Good will toward men.

Скрудж -Spirit, conduct me where you will.

second ghost -Touch my robe.

Video getting to Mr.Cratchit’s house.

second ghost -This is the house of your clerk Mr Cratchit

Скрудж -Yes, I see it. But why is their Christmas meal so plain and poor?

second ghost - It’s all they can afford with the money you pay. More than that, they have a very ill child, Timmy, and no money to cure him. And now just watch it.

Video in the house of Mr Cratchi.

Скрудж -Kind spirit, say Tiny Tim will be spared.

second ghost -If these shadows remain unaltered by the future...the child will die.

Скрудж - Die! No, spirit. No.

second ghost -What then? If he is to die, he had better do it. And decrease the surplus population.

Do you still think that poverty is the most frightful thing?

Скрудж -No, not any more.

Scene 6

Music and video of coming Death

(Scrooge and the third ghost)

Скрудж -Am I in the presence of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come? You're about to show me shadows of the things that have not happened but will happen. Is that so, spirit? Ghost of the Future, I fear you more than any specter I have seen .But I know your purpose is to do me good. I am prepared to bear you company. Lead on.

third ghost -The night is waning fast. It's precious time to me.

Скрудж -Lead on, spirit.

Picture Grave.

third ghost -Look, this is your grave in future! There are no even flowers on it. Nobody will come to remember you!

Скрудж -Spirit......before I draw nearer to that stone to which you point....answer me one question! Are these the shadows of things that will be...or shadows of things that may be? Men's courses in life foreshadow certain ends. But if these courses are departed from ,these ends will change. Isn't that so?

No. No! Am I that man who lay upon the bed?

No. Spirit, hear me! I'm not the man I was! Why show me this if I'm past all hope?

Spirit! Spirit, assure me that I may change these shadows you've shown me! Change them by an altered life!

No, spirit! No! No, spirit!

Good spirit... Help me!

Spirit! Help me, spirit!

Help, spirit!

Spirit, I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. I will not shut out the lessons of the past, nor present, nor future.

Oh, please, spirit.... tell me I may sponge away the writing on that stone!

Ведучий : Ebenezer Scrooge kept his word and much more he became as good a friend, as good a master, as good a man, as the good old city knew. Ghosts did not visit him anymore, and people said that he knew how to keep Christmas better than anybody else. And so God bless us, Everyone! A Merry Christmas!
